Sanjay Tanna is reportedly being bankrolled by Indian community to unseat Capt Mike Mukula for NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern region.
According to sources, the Indian community within and outside Uganda have been bankrolling Tanna, who is of Indian origin to a tune of over Shs2billion to unseat the incumbent Mike Mukula. The NRM National Executive Committee (NEC) will on Thursday convene to vote for top NRM leaders.
It has emerged that recently, Government of India through Indian companies in Uganda wired unspecified amounts of money to fund Tanna’s candidature. The objective is to ensure that Tanna wins the race so that he can promote the Indian community interests in Uganda at the expense of the Ugandan nationals.
However, NRM delegates are skeptical to vote for Tanna for fear of allowing Indians to mingle into political affairs of Uganda. This is a message that Mike Mukula has emphatically reechoed in his campaigns.
Apparently, most prominent Indian businessmen in Eastern Uganda are backing and bankrolling Tanna. Among them include; companies such as Mayuge Sugar Factory, GM sugar, Kamuli Sugar Company etc.
Of late, Sanjay Tanna’s empire has been struggling as some of his businesses have closed and others taken over by Banks over unpaid loans.
Whereas Tanna has support from most Indian community, he is not in good books with money magnate Sudhir Ruparelia who is a close associate to Mike Mukula. Sudhir openly supports Mukula at the expense of Tanna. Apparently, Sudhir and Tanna are embroiled in tribal conflicts over supremacy.
