Karamoja MPs Endorse Anita Among for Deputy Speaker

Hon Anita Among

Karamoja legislators have endorsed Bukedea Woman MP Annet Anita Among for Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

The MPs under their caucus Karamoja Parliamentary Group have ‘unanimously’ agreed to back Anita Among for Deputy Speaker slot ahead of the elections in May this year. The current Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah is eyeing the Speakership seat as the reigning Speaker Rebecca Kadaga wants a record third term.

At least 10 candidates are vying for Deputy Speakership seat including; David Bahati (Ndorwa West), Robina Rwakoojo (Gomba West), Muhammed Nsereko (Kampala Central), Oboth Oboth (West Budama South), Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda North), Theodore Ssekibuko (Lwemiyaga County) etc.

The competition is however, between Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa.

Speaking to Nakapiripirit Woman MP Esther Anyakun, who also doubles as the chairperson of Karamoja Parliamentary Group, the MPs from the sub region will vote for Speaker and Deputy Speaker who supports the Karamoja agenda. She said that such a leader should be able to enhance Members’ welfare, quality legislation and provide equal opportunities for the people of Karamoja.

“As MPs from Karamoja, we have an agenda and we believe that the candidate who will become Speaker or Deputy Speaker should be able to help us fulfill our agenda. We have realized that there is no Karamojong who is employed in Parliament, so the next speaker or deputy should be able to bring us on board,” Anyakun said.

Anyakun is confident that there is no other qualified candidate for Deputy Speaker than Hon Anita Among. She paid tribute to Among as a kind and dedicated leader who will steer legislation and enhance Members’ welfare at parliament.

“Anita is a personal friend. I know her qualities. She will be the right person to take up Deputy Speaker role because she has the zeal and social network with MPs, she is a very kind person and a worker who is so empathetic about issues of Members. We shall definitely support her on basis of equal opportunities, Members’ welfare and rule of law,” Anyakun said.

Anita Among, who is a prolific mobiliser is said to be holding a commanding lead in Eastern, West Nile and Northern region. Apparently, her camp has even penetrated deep in the western region where other candidates such as Bahati, Tayebwa etc hail from.
